What “small” text really is
There are two separate tricks here, and both are distinct Unicode blocks rather than a real change in font size. Superscript (ˢᵐᵃˡˡ) raises tiny letters above the baseline — the same characters behind footnote markers and ordinals like 1ˢᵗ. Subscript (ₛₘₐₗₗ) drops them below the baseline — the form used in chemistry and maths, as in H₂O or CO₂. Small caps (Sᴍᴀʟʟ) stay full height but turn lowercase into uniform mini-capitals. None of these resize a font: each is a set of real, standalone characters, which is exactly why they survive copy and paste with no app support needed.

The Unicode story behind small text
None of this is a font. The raised set lives mainly in the Superscripts and Subscripts block, with older forms in Phonetic Extensions and the Latin-1 Supplement; they were added so scientists and linguists could write notation and phonetics in plain text. Small caps come from Latin Extended. Because every glyph is a standalone character, you are borrowing letters rather than resizing anything — which is why the effect travels through copy and paste into apps that have no font controls of their own.
